On January 23, 2026, in negative temperatures, thousands of Minnesotans turned out in Minneapolis for a strike to protest the current administration’s policies. Multiple businesses across the city and state were also shut down in solidarity with the protests. At the same time of the protests downtown, another protest broke out at the Minneapolis-St Paul (MSP) airport as airport workers and clergy shut down the airport for a time to protest in solidarity. Over 100 clergy members were arrested.

On January 15, 2026, the Minnesota Regional Labor Council endorsed the action, calling it, “A Day of Truth and Freedom”. This was significant as the Minnesota Regional Labor Federal is composed of over 175 unions with 80,000+ members. The Minnesota AFL-CIO followed suit in endorsement. Many local unions did not call this action a “strike” though citing contracts that forbid striking. Many on the street called it a general strike and brought up parallels to the 1934 General Strike in Minneapolis.

The buildup to this was long time in coming. Since last year, federal agents had been conducting raids and harassing workers. On January 17, 2026, agents shot legal observer Renee Good as she was driving away. Federal agents had begun targeting ethnic communities around the country. As of writing of this article, on January 24, 2026, federal agents have shot another legal observer on the street that was being held down by multiple agents.

Other cities followed suit to the strike on Friday, with solidarity strikes and protests in Philadelphia, New York, Oakland, and other cities. The strikes appear to have the form of a pre-democratic labor front that is necessary to combat fascism and monopoly capitalism.

Even with the overwhelming support for the strike, some business union leaders pushed against it. There were reports of a local Teamsters union distributing flyers stating anyone who joined in the strike would be in breach of contract. Large businesses that have contracts and cooperate with the federal government, like Target, 3M, Best Buy, and Delta Airlines have stated nothing on the strike. The silence of the corporations echoes more loudly with Target stores being used as staging ground for ICE raids even as one Target made national news on January 13, 2026, when ICE kidnapped two workers from a Roseville, MN Target store.

LUEL is closing following this developing situation. LUEL calls on labor to unite with progressive groups and other civic groups to build an anti-monopoly coalition. Only then can labor develop into a fighting force that can combat the rising fascism brought on monopoly capitalism.

Desde el 29 de octubre, el pueblo de Valencia ha tenido una herida abierta, que no puede comenzar a sanar hasta que los responsables de pagar por su negligencia. La persona principal responsable de lo sucedido es claramente Presidente Carlos Mazón, pero eso no significa que él era el único, pues las acciones de los empleadores también seriamente en peligro la salud y la vida de la clase obrera, que en algunos casos tuvo consecuencias fatales, y en otros, ha dado lugar a importantes efectos psicológicos.

Los sindicatos que forman parte de la Federación Mundial de Sindicatos han estado ahí desde el principio, no sólo se ayuda a la población para enfrentar la situación, pero también denunciar las acciones del presidente y de los empleadores, y exigiendo la investigación de los responsables.

La huelga general convocada para el 29 de Mayo, organizada conjuntamente por varios sindicatos en el País Valenciano, es un histórico de la huelga general, como es la primera vez que una huelga general convocada a nivel nacional.

Los sindicatos de llamar a la huelga exigiendo cargos penales contra los responsables de las muertes de los trabajadores, comenzando con el Presidente Mazón, y también están exigiendo compensación y la justicia para las víctimas de la DANA, la reversión de las privatizaciones y el fortalecimiento de los servicios públicos, para que los afectados por la regulación de empleo resultante de la DANA recibir el 100% de sus salarios, la creación de un número ilimitado de licencia paga para situaciones de alertas meteorológicas, la reducción de la semana laboral de 32 horas o cuatro días, los aumentos salariales y el respeto por el derecho a la vivienda con los controles en el alquiler y los precios de venta, y la creación de un inventario de viviendas públicas.

Por todas estas razones, la Oficina Regional Europea de la Federación Mundial de Sindicatos envía su total apoyo y solidaridad a la huelga general del 29 de Mayo en el País Valenciano, con la esperanza de que será un gran éxito, que va a marcar un punto de inflexión en el país y que va a ser un paso adelante en el fortalecimiento de la clase basada en el sindicalismo en el País Valenciano.

This strike, called by our affiliate, USB, is a bold and necessary response to the devastating policies of the Meloni government and the European Union that deepen social inequalities, exacerbate poverty, and intensify exploitation. These policies prioritize the profits of banks and monopolies, fuel militarization, and undermine democratic freedoms and workers’ rights.

The WFTU unequivocally condemns the Italian government’s actions that align with the broader imperialist agenda, which promotes war as a solution to the capitalist crisis. We denounce the allocation of resources to the war economy, the escalation of military spending, and support for imperialist interventions, including in Ukraine and Palestine, while workers and peoples are left to suffer under precarious conditions, starvation wages, and deindustrialization.

The struggles of the USB reflect the just demands of the Italian working class and the broader society for fair wages, decent work, quality public services, environmental protection, and genuine democratic freedoms. The situation that the Italian working class faces, highlight the urgent need for resistance against the attacks on fundamental rights, the privatization of public goods, and the assault on civil liberties.

We call upon all militant class-oriented trade unions and progressive forces worldwide to express their solidarity with the USB and the working class of Italy. We reaffirm that international solidarity is our strongest weapon in the struggle against imperialism, exploitation, and war.

Our Choice is Very Clear and Consistent

Faced with an important contractual season as never before, in a phase of uncontrolled increase in the cost of living due to the crisis and war policies, if the government comes to the table with resources that cover only one third of what salaries have lost in purchasing power due to inflation, the task of a trade union organisation worthy of the name is to denounce all this, break the consociative climate and be consequential in its choices.

Outside a table emptied of value, inside the workplace alongside those who carry on the public administration, guaranteeing rights, services and the welfare state.

The strike of 31 October grows in the attention and consideration of women and men workers,
confirming the centrality of our choice and the reasons that led us to leave the negotiating table.
A wave of indignation and discontent that certainly cannot be overcome by the Government’s choice to make available further resources for a paltry 0.22% (by the way, not for everyone) that leaves the loss of purchasing power of wages at 10%.

Today it is more necessary than ever to invite all public workers to strike, to remind them of the fundamental role they play, to offer them coherent platforms and perspectives.

Building conscious struggles is the most important goal: the square on 31 October will shout these watchwords to the Minister of the Public Service.

Maritime workers, Teachers, Dockers, Metalworkers, Workers in Hotels, Tourism, Catering, delivery were on strike demanding Collective Contracts with better wages as well as Health and Safety regulations at work.

Teachers National Strike

The School Teachers National Strike took place against the Ministry of Education attempt to ban the strike through court order the declared the strike ILLEGAL.

Against these tactics the Teachers, with the solidarity of all unions, went on strike escalating it also the level of High schools.

In practice, against the Ministry’s intimidations and bans all first and second level education went on Strike with the teachers rally in Athens being one of the most massive of the last years.

Piraeus Port

Maritime workers, dockers and Metalworkers of the Shipyards held a massive strike which held a protest at the Maritime Ministry. After the Ministry refused to accept the workers’ demands the unions moved to OCCUPY the Ministry and extend their strike on October 24. Maritime workers decided to extend their strike to 48 hours on October 24-25.

Hotel-Tourism Workers

Major Hotels of Athens shut down during the National Strike of Hotel Tourism Workers who demand Collective Contract with better wages. The workers held massive picket lines in front of the hotels and marched to the Ministry of Labor and the Hotel Owners Association. Big Hotels had to announce inability to serve due to the strike.

A big strike river started in the morning, from the port of Piraeus and flooded Athens and other cities of the country. Maritime workers in the shipping industry, dockers in the port of Piraeus, metalworkers in the Shipbuilding Zone, thousands of hotel workers, teachers, kindergarten teachers and High school teachers all over Greece took the baton from the delivery riders and health workers. They are passing the baton to the next sectors that follow, such as the Construction workers, but again to the Riders, and together they are strengthening the front of the workers in the strike escalation to paralyze the country on November 20, in the NATIONAL GENERAL STRIKE, with the slogan ‘Out of the war slaughterhouses, give money for wages, health and education‘ “.

"The government is worried and we will see to it that its worry becomes real fear from the rise of demands. Within a few days it has tried to criminalise and cancel decisions on three strike actions. Of train drivers demanding safety measures on rail transport, of mental health workers demanding that the bill to dismantle Health and Rehabilitation facilities be cancelled, and yesterday of teachers and kindergarten teachers demanding pay rises and modern infrastructure for themselves and their students.
